Scripture 2
Corinthians 5:16-21
So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of
view. (Do this and radically
change the world) Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no
longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who
reconciled (fixed the
relationship) us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,
not counting men's sins against them. (BIG DEAL – God has to count men’s sins against them!!!) And he has
committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's
ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on
Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. = (Be in a fixed relationship with God – How does that happen?...) 21 God made
him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the (right-ness) righteousness of God.
WOMAN CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF ADULTERY
John 8:2-11
At dawn he appeared again in the temple
courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach
them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman (at least only to
the court of women) caught in adultery. They made her stand
before the group 4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5
In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.
Now what do you say?" (Leviticus
20:10
If there is a man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.)
If there is a man who commits adultery with another man's wife, one who commits adultery with his friend's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.)
6 They were
using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on
the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and
said to them, "If any one of you is without sin,
let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on
the ground. (like a parenthesis) 9 At this, those who heard began to go away
one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman
still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her,
"Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do
I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now
and leave your life of sin."
HOLE IN THE ROOF
Mark 2:1-12
A few days later, when Jesus again entered
Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many gathered that there
was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.
3 Some men
came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could
not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof
above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man
was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
6 Now some
teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming!
Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Immediately Jesus knew in his
spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to
them, "Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are
forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? But that you may know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . ."
He said to the paralytic, "I tell you, get up,
take your mat and go home."
He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This
amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We
have never seen anything like this!"
TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN
PARADISE
Luke 23:34-46
And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. The people
stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said,
"He saved others; let him save himself if he
is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also
came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."
38 There was a
written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 One of the criminals who
hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself
and us!" But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds
deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." 42 Then he
said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into
your kingdom." Jesus answered him, "I
tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
44 It was now about the sixth hour,
and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped
shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus
called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your
hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his
last.
(To this story,
Luke adds…) FORGIVE THEM Luke 23:32-34 Two
other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they
came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the
criminals — one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are
doing." And they divided up
his clothes by casting lots.
CONCLUSION
Alexander III was Tsar of Russia
from 1881-1894. His rule was marked by repression, and in particular by
persecution of Jews. His wife, Maria Fedorovna, provided a stark contrast,
being known for her generosity to those in need. On one occasion her husband
had signed an order consigning a prisoner to life in exile. It read simply SLIDE #1 “Pardon impossible, to
be sent to Siberia.” Maria changed that prisoner’s life by moving the
comma in her husband’s order. She altered it to SLIDE #2 “Pardon, impossible to be sent to Siberia.”
In Christ God has changed the comma
that stood against us. From SLIDE
#3 “Pardon impossible, to be sent to Siberia” comes the good news of
salvation: “Pardon,
impossible to be sent to Siberia.”
