Moses: Led the people out of slavery
Ex 3:1-14
Now Moses was tending the flock of
Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far
side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of
the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that
though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, "I
will go over and see this strange sight — why the bush does not burn up."
When the Lord
saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush,
"Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am." "Do not
come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place
where you are standing is holy ground." 6 Then he said, "I am the God
of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob."
At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, "I have indeed seen the
misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their
slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down
to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that
land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey — the
home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the
Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to
bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." But Moses said to God,
"Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of
Egypt?" And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign
to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of
Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain." Moses said to God,
"Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers
has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I
tell them?" God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are
to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"
John the Baptist: Pointed the people
to Jesus
Mark 1:1-11
The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of
God.
2 It is
written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way"— "a voice of one calling
in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.'"
4 And so John
came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of
Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in
the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather
belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his
message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose
sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water,
but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
9 At that
time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the
Jordan. 10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn
open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from
heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Jesus: Showed us how to live
Matt 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit
into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty
nights, he was hungry.
The tempter came to him and said,
"If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus
answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every
word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
Then the devil took him to the holy
city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the
Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He
will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their
hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus
answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the
test.'"
Again, the
devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said,
"if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away
from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him
only.'"
Then
the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
