Acts 1:6-11
So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom
to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has
set by his own authority. 8 But you will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a
cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky
as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11
"Men of Galilee," they said,
"why do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the
same way you have seen him go into heaven."
DEAD GIRL RAISED – Two Views
Aunt Pam died (SLIDES: Prayers on facebook)
– what would we do if we just heard she came back to life?
JAIRUS & WOMAN WHO TOUCHED THE HEM OF JESUS GARMENT
Luke 8:54-56
But he took her by the hand and said, "My
child, get up!" 55
Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her
something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not
to tell anyone what had happened.
HOWEVER – same story look how it
ends in Matthew…
Matt 9:25-26
…After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by
the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region.
Look at the story in the next
verse: TWO BLIND MEN
Matt 9:27-31
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out,
"Have
mercy on us, Son of David!" When he had gone indoors, the blind men
came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe
that I am able to do this?" "Yes,
Lord," they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you"; and
their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this." But they went out and spread the news about him all over
that region.
LEPROSY
Mark 1:40-45
A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."
Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"
Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured. 43
Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself
to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,
as a testimony to them." 45
Instead he went
out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer
enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still
came to him from everywhere.
THERE IS AN ORDER TO ALL THINGS:
Matt 17:9-13 (The Transfiguration)
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what
you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
The disciples asked him, "Why then do the
teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?" Jesus
replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will
restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not
recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the
Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was
talking to them about John the Baptist.
(Don’t tell now – tell when I am gone)
IRONY: TELLING THE HEALED MUTE NOT TO TALK
Mark 7:32-37
Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,
and they begged him to place his hand on the man. After he took him aside, away
from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and
touched the man's tongue. He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to
him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!"). At this, the man's ears were
opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. Jesus commanded them
not to tell anyone. But
the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were
overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done
everything well," they said. "He
even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
HEROD: LOOKING FOR A MIRACLE WORKER NOT FOR A SAVIOR
Luke 23:8-9
When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time
he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle.
CONCLUSION
LEGION: GO AND TELL!
Luke 8:38-39
The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but
Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 "Return home and tell how much God
has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much
Jesus had done for him.
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all
Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
