1-26-14 Do you see an empty cross or a crucifix?

Scripture                                      Colossians 1:15-20

Jesus came to pay a debt He didn't owe because we owed a debt we couldn't pay

SECTION 1 Christ is mediator of Creation

Col 1:15-20          He is the image of the invisible God, (How can the invisible be made visible? He does not serve as a representation – rather he is the invisible God in visible form- the essence of who God is has taken on flesh.  Rom 1:20  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  Col 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form But wait – aren’t we created in the image and likeness of God? Yes, but we are a representation bearing similarities too; where Christ is actual image – God made flesh…not an image like God, but actual God.  Think of it this way – we adopt his image, Jesus is the one and only begotten – natural born Son of God. Jesus can’t deviate from that image – as adopted children, we can break away from that image so that Paul tells us in Col 3:10 put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.) the firstborn over all creation. (Firstborn does not mean the child who came first, rather it means the one with the status of the firstborn as in Ps 89:27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. Paul shows Christ as not the best of creation, rather the one OVER all creation.  This is how he is able to perform miracles like stopping the storm on the sea or turning water into wine.) 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.  (Whether there are visible thrones and rulers on earth or invisible powers and authorities in heaven – ALL THINGS were made BY CHRIST and created FOR CHRIST) 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  (God in Christ did not create the world and then walk away.  He has remained the spiritual gravity that holds all things together.  He is the reason all things exist and therefore he remains constant in his creation.  Even those who do not believe in Christ owe every breath and thought to Him without whom no one exists.)

But being over and in and through all of creation is not enough for understanding who the invisible God made visible in Christ. There is more…

SECTION 2   Christ is Lord over God’s New order = the Church

18 And he is the head of the body, the church; (I don’t know how many ways I can emphasize the importance of the church. And we have opportunity to participate in Christ’s creation – the every-where-ness of God as well as participate in Christ’s church the  right-here-ness  of  Christ  with the one who created them both and lives by, in, and through them both. What ultimately happens to creation is completely tied to what happens to the church in Christ.) he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. (Talking about the church – it is not about us, but about his redemptive work done on the cross – the church must preach the cross of Christ - 1 Cor 1:22-24 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Firstborn from among the dead not to assure us of a later resurrection only but of resurrection power NOW IN HIS CHURCH!  Phil 3:10-11  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. WOW not a later resurrection but to know that same power that raised Jesus form the dead now – the power of the cross to redeem me from my sin and make me fit for heaven and a part of his body – the church – working in the world for him and through him.) 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, (In the OT God dwelt in a temple and in places and only in part – now ALL of who God is dwells in a person – in Jesus through his body the church – not a stone temple but a living body – you and me.) 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. (The Christ of Creation Glory becomes the Christ of Cross humiliation – The creator of life is experiencing painful suffering and death to have creation and the church’s purpose fulfilled – new life for his dying creation – salvation for you and me.)

The first section is Christ bringing life into being (creation) by the power of his spoken word, “Let there be…and there was!”  The second section is Christ bringing life to his body – the church – his people – by shedding his blood and dying on the cross.

How does the invisible God of creation become visible in Christ after the resurrection?

In her book The God Who Hung on the Cross, journalist Ellen Vaughn retells a story of how the Gospel came to a small village in Cambodia. In September 1999 Pastor Tuy Seng (not his real name) traveled to Kampong Thom Province in northern Cambodia. Throughout that isolated area, most villagers had cast their lot with Buddhism or spiritism. Christianity was virtually unheard of.

But much to Seng's surprise, when he arrived in one small, rural village the people warmly embraced him and his message about Jesus. When he asked the villagers about their openness to the gospel, an old woman shuffled forward, bowed, and grasped Seng's hands as she said, "We have been waiting for you for twenty years." And then she told him the story of the mysterious God who had hung on the cross.

In the 1970s the Khmer Rouge, the brutal, Communist-led regime, took over Cambodia, destroying everything in its path. When the soldiers finally descended on this rural, northern village in 1979, they immediately rounded up the villagers and forced them to start digging their own graves. After the villagers had finished digging, they prepared themselves to die. Some screamed to Buddha, others screamed to demon spirits or to their ancestors.  One of the women started to cry for help based on a childhood memory—a story her mother told her about a God who had hung on a cross. The woman prayed to that unknown God on a cross. Surely, if this God had known suffering, he would have compassion on their plight.

Suddenly, her solitary cry became one great wail as the entire village started praying to the God who had suffered and hung on a cross. As they continued facing their own graves, the wailing slowly turned to a quiet crying. There was an eerie silence in the muggy jungle air. Slowly, as they dared to turn around and face their captors, they discovered that the soldiers were gone.

As the old woman finished telling this story, she told Pastor Seng that ever since that humid day from 20 years ago the villagers had been waiting, waiting for someone to come and share the rest of the story about the God who had hung on a cross.

Cross of Christ

          George MacLeod wrote:

I simply argue that the cross be raised again        at the center of the market place as well as on the steeple of the church, I am recovering the claim that Jesus was not crucified in a cathedral between two candles: But on a cross between two thieves; on a town garbage heap;           at a crossroad of politics so cosmopolitan that they had to write His title in Hebrew and in Latin and in Greek…And at the kind of place where cynics talk smut, and thieves curse and soldiers gamble. Because that is where He died, and that is what he died about. And that is where Christ’s people ought to be, and what church people ought to be about.

1-19-14 Remember the Good Old Days

REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Scripture                                          Isaiah 48:1-11

Talk about the good old days of church.  The things you remember most about how church used to be that is no longer that way.

Let’s look at the good OLD days of the Old testament which weren’t so good.

CAPTIVITY TO RETURN – like Egypt [like sin]

Assyria (Israel) / Babylon (Judah) / Persian – King Cyrus

God is going to say it plainly ‘once more’

Faculties in higher education are notorious for their endless debate.  As scholars with a gift of working ideas and weighing the details the tendency is to talk until all parties are heard and every option is explored.  Then, if everyone is not satisfied and the proceedings run true to form, the issue will be referred to committee for further study before a recommendation is made.  Among college presidents, this saying is often repeated, “Nothing ever happens in a faculty meeting until the President defines the ‘sense of the meeting.’

Isaiah 48:1-11

"Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the Lord and invoke the God of Israel (Sounds like he is addressing the faithful – the ones you want at your church) — but not in truth or righteousness —   you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel — the Lord Almighty is his name:  (Again, a little confusing because it sounds like the best of the best but somehow they are not – they only seem to be.)

I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze.  (Quite the picture of a stiff-necked people) Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.'  You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? (In other words, I told you things that would happen long before they happened so you would know I speak the truth and I hold the future in my hands. – but they did not believe God had done it, rather their idols)

"From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you. 7 They are created now, and not long ago;  (I’m not just going to repeat the things of old but do something new that you will see come to pass and know I have done it…then maybe you will turn back to me FOR REAL) you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.'  You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth.

(Why does God even care – why doesn’t he go to a different people then the ones he chose?  Surely another group of people – let’s call them Christians would get it right.) He did it not for them, rather…For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another.

SHIFT TO TODAY AND TO THE CHURCH

We know the church is not the same as a thousand years ago…or 500 years ago during the reformation – or 60 years ago in the 1950’s.  But now the church shifts that used to take 1000 or even hundreds of years to take place do so not even in decades but in a few years.  My job today is vastly different than it was 25 years ago and continues to change as the nature of the church changes.  Let’s look at some shifts during that and more recent times.

What does this mean for me – for us?  This means we not only have to make sure we don’t have an iron neck or a bronze forehead, but that we improve our flexibility and that only comes with exercise. That only comes with being present as the first step.  We need to develop more people passionately involved with the growth and relevance of the church to most effectively impact today’s culture, not bemoan its existence and hunker in the bunker pretending it doesn’t exist.

Who are those who will rise up regardless of age and not be content to put in an hour a week at best but willing to commit your life for the sake of Christ’s church – for it to become the most important quest in your life.  If we don’t do all we can, the church that you have known will cease to exists – just ask the people in the 8000 US churches that closed their doors in 2013.

Why close?  Declining attendance.  When you have 12 people left there is not a lot of reason to keep paying the electric bill.  Who is no longer at church?  The Good News is the majority of people no longer at church are the people on the fringes – the once to twice a month attenders.  The ones with little investment.  I say good news because the faithful remnant remains.  I have proof in dollars and cents.  We had an average of 50 fewer people in attendance in 2013 than we had in 2012.  Sounds alarming?  Wait – our regular giving through offerings was nearly identical to the previous year…with 50 fewer people.  What does that tell you about commitment level of the 50 people who are no longer here?  Better yet, what does that tell you about the people who are still here?  Committed.

Look, we do not need to make stuff up for a new culture in a new day – God is already doing that – we just need to keep our eyes on Him and go here He is going.  If that means pump up existing ministries of Sunday School, Small groups, Misison Circles in a new way than we do that.  If that means adding multiple services or even different venues for where we offer worship then we do that.  Not where should we move in ministry but where is God already moving in ministry and how to we best follow him there?

CORPORATE MOVEMENT

Isaiah 43:19     See, I am doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

INDIVIDUAL MOVEMENT

2 Corinthians 5:17     Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

1-12-14 The arrogance of Jesus

Scripture                           Exodus 3:13-15

Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"  15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob — has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

I AM THAT I AM
YHVH is the personal name of God and his most frequent designation, occurring over 6,800 times. This is the Ineffable Name or Unutterable Name of God. It is composed from the four Hebrew letters Yod, Hey, Vav, and Hey.

When Moses stood before the burning bush and God spoke to him and told him to go to the Pharaoh of Egypt to tell him to let God’s people go, Moses asked “what is your name or who do I tell them has sent?”  God simply answered Moses, "ehyeh-asher-ehyeh":           Exodus 3:14

I AM THAT I AM. (Exodus 3:14; cp. John 8:58).

The phrase ehyeh asher ehyeh (rendered as "I AM THAT I AM") derives from the imperfect first person form of the verb hayah: "I will be," and therefore indicates a connection between the Name YHVH and being itself. YHVH is the Source of all being and has being inherent in Himself.  Everything else is contingent being that derives existence from Him. He is the Source and Foundation of all possibility of utterance and is beyond all definite descriptions.

This special Name of God (YHVH) was combined with "The God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob" to be God's Name forever, "my memorial to all generations" (see Exodus 3:15-16).

Elohim is the Name given for God as the Creator of the universe (Gen 1:1-2:4a) and implies strength, power, and justice. YHVH, on the other hand, expresses the idea of God's closeness to humans. For example, YHVH "breathed into his (Adam's) nostrils the breath of life" (Genesis 2:7).

Jehovah? the Masoretes ensured that the Name of the LORD would not be taken in vain by substituting the vowel marks for Adonai and putting them under the letters http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Names_of_G-d/yhvh4.gif this has led to the obviously incorrect pronunciation of the Name as "Jehovah".   So Jehovah, though used by Christians for centuries, and a combination of two names for God is not a true biblical word.  Yahweh is the word yet cannot be pronounced.  There were no vowels in the name.  There is no “W” sound in the Hebrew language.  Therefore, we do not know how to pronounce the name that can’t be pronounced, even though it was pronounced once a year.
The sacred Name for God was uttered aloud 10 times once per year (during Yom Kippur) by the High Priest. When the people heard the Name, they prostrated themselves in deep reverence.

So the greatest name we have for God cannot be pronounced. God is the great “I am” but we don’t know how to say it, at least not until Jesus comes.

John 8:58     "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"
Notice the connection between what God said to Moses and who Jesus is to us: God said to Moses, say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' The God of your fathers — the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — has sent me to you.'

John 8:58     "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"  (Exodus 3:14 and John 8:58)  The OT points to Jesus, the NT reveals him.  Let’s see how Jesus – the great “I am” is revealed in the NT.

LIVING BREAD

John 6:51  "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever;"

FROM ABOVE

John 8:23: And He said to them, "You are from beneath; I AM from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.

I AM (again)

John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

THE DOOR (combined with next one)

John 10:9: "I AM the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."

GOOD SHEPHERD

John 10:11: "I AM the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

SON OF GOD

John 10:36: "why do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?  (John 10:34-39  Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came — and the Scripture cannot be broken—what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."  Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.)

RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE (to Martha)

John 11:25: Jesus said to her, "I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

THE WAY, THE TRUTH, THE LIFE

(at the last supper - Thomas: we don’t know where you are going, how can we know the way)

John 14:6: Jesus said to him, "I AM the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.

TRUE VINE (connected like branches to the vine)

John 15:1: "I AM the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.

KING OF THE JEWS

John 19:2: Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the Jews."'

LIGHT OF THE WORLD & THE ONE I CLAIM TO BE

Right after the woman caught in the act of adultery:

John 8:12-32
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." 13 The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." 19 Then they asked him, "Where is your father?"  "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."  He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come.  Once more Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come."  This made the Jews ask, "Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, 'Where I go, you cannot come'?" 23 But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins." "Who are you?" they asked.  "Just what I have been claiming all along," Jesus replied. 26 "I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."  They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."  Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him.  To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

The only truth that can set you free from sin is the truth that the great “I AM”, who told Moses his name is YHWH-Jesus!  And that – NO! And He…is the truth!

12-29-13 FAITHBOOK: in a word…

FAITHBOOK: in a word…Jesus!
Matt 21:9   "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

John 1:1 & 14   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.     The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Phil 2:5-11   Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I have discovered 5 categories in the New Testament about the word: The are Prayer, Persecution, Healing, Salvation and Proclamation

# 1   PRAYER

************

Matt 18:20

Jesus said, “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

Luke 11:2

Jesus said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, holy is your name”

John 14:13-14

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

************

# 2  PERSECUTION

Luke 21:12-13      on account of my name

But before all this, they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.

1 Peter 4:14                   count it a blessing

If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

John 17:11-12      Jesus prays for us

Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name — the name you gave me — so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me.

Rev 3:8-9             you are faithful

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

************

# 3  HEALING

Acts 3:6-7     lame man at the temple

Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

Acts 3:16     continuing to the crowd with lame man at the temple

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.

Acts 4:9-10     continuing to the authorities with lame man at the temple

If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

Luke 10:17     returning after being sent out by Jesus 2 x 2

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

************

# 4  SALVATION

John 20:30, 31     written so you can believe

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Acts 4:12     only one way to salvation

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

1 John 3:23-24

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

John 1:12-13

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

Acts 2:21     Everyone can have salvation

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

Rom 10:13     Again; everyone can have salvation

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Acts 10:43     Yet again; everyone can have salvation

All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

1 John 2:12     forgive by his name

I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.

1 Cor 6:11     sanctified by his name

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Acts 22:16     Get going by his name

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.'

# 5  PROCLAMAITON

Acts 5:40-42

Gamaliel’s speech persuaded the Sanhedrin who had arrested the apostles. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

Phil 2:5-11

Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
