04-02-23 Why are you untying it?

Scripture          Luke 19:29-31, Matthew 21:4-5, Luke 19:32-34, Mark 11:7-10

INTRODUCTION

It is Palm Sunday and Jesus is coming into Jerusalem riding a white stallion…

Here is how it really happened:

Luke 19:29-31 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.'"

Matthew 21:4-5  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

Luke 19:32-34 32  Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They replied, "The Lord needs it."

Mark 11:7-10  7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest!"

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is anything you have that the Lord needs

IT COSTS EVERYTHING

A man sees a pearl of amazing size and beauty in a jewelry shop.

He says to the merchant, “I want this pearl. How much is it?” The seller says, “It’s very expensive.” “How much?” “A lot!” “Well, do you think I could buy it?” the man asks. “Oh, yes,” says the merchant, “everyone can buy it.” “But I thought you said it was very expensive.” “I did.” “Well, how much?” “Everything you have,” says the seller. “All right, I’ll buy it.” “Okay, what do you have?” “Well, I have $10,000 in the bank.” “Good, $10,000. What else?” “That’s all I have.” “Nothing more?” “Well, I have a few dollars more in my pocket.” “How much?” “Let’s see … $100.” “That’s mine, too,” says the seller. “What else do you have?” “That’s all, nothing else.” “Where do you live?” the seller asks. “In my house. Yes, I own a home.” The seller writes down, 'house.' “It’s mine.” “Where do you expect me to sleep—in my camper?” “Oh, you have a camper, do you? That, too. What else?” “Am I supposed to sleep in my car?” “Oh, you have a car?” “Yes, I own two of them.” “They’re mine now.” “Look, you’ve taken my money, my house, my camper, and my cars. Where is my family going to live?” “So, you have a family?” “Yes, I have a wife and three kids.” “They’re mine now.” Suddenly the seller exclaims, “Oh, I almost forgot! You yourself, too! Everything becomes mine—wife, children, house, money, cars, and you, too.” Then he goes on, “Now, listen, I will allow you to use all these things for the time being. But don’t forget that they’re all mine, just as you are. And whenever I need any of them, you must give them up, because I am now the owner.

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is any sin that so easily entangles you

1 John 1:8-9

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is any thought or emotion that has you bound

Dr. Maxwell Maltz is a plastic surgeon. Listen as he describes how physical deformities can be mild compared to our inner emotional and thought deformities:

"One day many years ago a woman in her mid-twenties came to my offices. She had a deep indented scar on her left cheek, a constant reminder of an automobile accident she'd been in. She looked unhappy, with herself and her life."

"'Who wouldn't be, in her situation,' I asked myself. As a kid, looking in the mirror when she brushed her teeth or combed her hair, she saw a perfectly normal face and began to take it for granted. Now, when she looks in the mirror, she must think, `Oh no, I look awful! I used to have a normal face, now I have two entirely different cheeks.'"

"I told her that I'd remove the scar and, after surgery, she'd look fine once again. `Don't worry,' I said, `We'll take good care of you.'"

She asked how she would look, and I reassured her and tried to soothe her fears. Later, I operated on her.

After a week's time, she came back. I took the bandages off and handed her a mirror. Her scarred cheek was a thing of the past.

Then I waited for her reaction. Many patients are overjoyed when they first see their new, improved image. But her reaction was uncertain; she expressed no real positive emotion. I waited a few seconds, then said, "What do you think? Do you like it?"

She responded, `I really don't see any improvement.'

I was stunned. My surgery had been totally successful. `Would you like to see the pictures of your face before the operation?'

She looked at the "before" pictures, then surveyed her new face in the hand mirror.

"`It looks better,' she admitted, `but I don't feel better!'"

Cases such as this one (and there have been many!) help us understand that all scars cannot be seen, that some are deeply embedded, worse than physical scars, they are inside us and infinitely painful.

Dr. Maltz concluded, "here is where our greatest needs lie, not on the outside of us, but on the inside. That, of course, is the meaning of the Gospel."

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

Our inner darkness can cloud our understanding of our sins that need forgiveness and can hide things in our life that can be used by God. We need to untie those things in the darkness and give them to Jesus so our darkness will be turned to light, our sins will be forgiven and our lives will be used in greater measure for the will and purpose of Jesus Christ!

"Why are you untying it? Because Jesus needs it - Jesus needs you!"

CONCLUSION

Do you have trouble believing that a humble messiah riding into town on a donkey 2000+ years ago can help you untie your thoughts, emotions, sin, possessions and abilities. That same Jesus will come riding into town again much closer to the way I described at the beginning.

Revelation 19:11-16

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice, he judges and makes war.   His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

3-19-23 "How long shall I put up with you?"

Scripture                                              Matthew 17:14-20

Have you ever felt that way? I have felt that way many times; "How long shall I put up with you?"  I have no doubt Jesus has looked at me over the past 48 years and with great aspiration has said, "Jeff, how long shall I put up with you?"

Matt 17:14-20

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."

17 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

We talk about faith, but how much has our faith grown beyond belief in eternal life?

Answer 1 - Jesus will put up with us as long as there are people to be saved.

2 Peter 3:8-9  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Answer 2 - Until our faith has grown to produce results for building His church.

Luke 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"

Jesus is waiting for us to ACT on our FAITH. Jesus never says what the disciples dream of doing or hope to be doing. In fact, the Bible calls the book about them "The ACTS of the Apostles". Faith is never evident in a void.

James 2:14-17  (NIV)  What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 2:14-17  (MSG)    Dear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup — where does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

When Jesus said, "You could not heal him because your faith is too little." He did not mean they did not believe enough - he meant they did not "DO" enough. "Do what you pray!"

Lynne Fuller  - I have faith we need a women's Bible study - after telling her several times to do it, finally her faith became real and she is doing what she thought she could never do - she started and is leading a tremendous women's Bible Study - THAT is faith!

NIKE did not originate the phrase, "Just Do It!" Coming back to God from living in exile, many Jewish men married foreign women and took on their culture. God wanted a pure people and told them to get rid of all foreign women and children Ezra 10:4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and (just) do it!

Jesus is saying to these disciples, You could not heal him because you didn't ACT in faith.

Not only do it - but do it without complaint

Not only do it and without complaint but do it with joy and edification

FAITH IS ACTION WITHOUT COMPLAINING

Philippians 2:12-18

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you hold out the word of life — so that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Lack of faith is not the problem - we all have faith which is why we are sitting on these chairs, why we put gas in the car, why we get into an airplane. Lack of faith is not the problem - living that faith - acting on that faith is the problem. Two-thirds of the world and 50 percent of all church members will not even roll out of bed on Sunday morning. They don't need more faith, they just need to roll out of bed and get to church!

ILLUSTRATION JEWELRY SHOP IN ISRAEL

Robert C. Morgan in his book, LIFT HIGH THE CROSS, tells about a woman who has a gift shop on the Via Doloroso in Jerusalem. Her name is Frieda Hannah. Frieda is a Palestinian Christian. She makes beautiful embroidery and cross-stitch work. Her specialties are altar paraments, clergy stoles, and Bible markers. She is a very frail woman. She has been in business at the same spot, the sixth station of the cross, for more than thirty years. Her eyes are beginning to fail her. She must wear thick glasses. If you go by Frieda's shop you will see her smiling and greeting the tourists. She has made friends with thousands.

A teacher tells about being in her shop one day with a group of students. Another large group of pilgrims from America were in the shop, too. All of the members of this second group had their Bibles under their arms and crosses hanging from their necks. They were pushing and shoving, demanding to be waited on. A group of little Palestinian beggars had followed the group into the shop asking for money. These "Christian" tourists were indignant. The teacher said they made comments like, "Get these dirty kids out of here." Or, "Why don't they stay in Jordan where they belong?"

Frieda overheard these remarks. The teacher was embarrassed and apologized for his fellow Americans, even though he did not even know them. Frieda's response was, "Oh, that is all right. I learned a long time ago that many of those who [take] the Bible literally don't take it seriously."

Frieda certainly takes the Bible seriously. During the last thirty years, using the earnings from her little shop, she has given over 1,000 Palestinian youth a higher education in North America or Europe. She has built and supported the operation of three medical clinics in the West Bank. She has built and operates two orphanages. There is no way of determining the good that this Christian woman has done over the years.

Frieda Hannah is a modest person. She is always embarrassed to talk about what she does. When asked on one occasion where she gets the energy and determination, she responded, "God did not place me in this world just to take up space. It is not enough just to go along. God wants me to make a difference where I can."

ENCOURAGEMENT

"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." = ACTION
There was never a man whose faith was shown by his actions than Dwight D Eisenhower.

It is a common practice at military academies for the upper classmen to haze the first-year students. This is part of the initiation rites. "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." = ACTION, as a second-year student at West Point, participated in these activities. One day a plebe, as freshmen were called, bumped into Eisenhower. Such an act was unpardonable, so Eisenhower responded as expected, yelling and screaming at the young cadet. Searching for the most demeaning thing he could utter, Eisenhower said the plebe looked like a barber. With that remark, the plebe drew himself up to his full height, squared his shoulders, thrust forth his jaw, and responded that he was a barber. It was as a barber that he had supported his family before coming to the Academy.

Devastated, Eisenhower returned to his room. He retold the incident to his roommate, confessing, "I've just done something stupid and unforgivable. I just managed to make a man ashamed of his work to earn a living." In his autobiography, Eisenhower wrote that for him this was a lesson about "the lack of consideration for others." In his room that day, Eisenhower vowed never to demean another individual again. It was a promise he kept throughout his life, even as Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War and as the thirty-fourth President of the United States. He became an encourager and it showed in the effectiveness of his leadership.

That is the very heart of the Christian faith in action!

3-5-23 Why do you ask me about what is good?

Scripture                                               Matthew 19:16-30

Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'" "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first."

Jesus' question for today is, "Why do you ask me about what is good?"

This is in response to the greatest question any human can ask, "What good thing must I do to live forever?" Who wants to live forever in a perfect heaven where Rev 21:3-4 "The dwelling of God is with people, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. And where Rev 21:16-22:2  the city is made of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls are decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation is jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.  The twelve gates are twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city is of pure gold, like transparent glass. You will not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. And there will be the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of heaven.

Who wants to live there forever? ME! That is what we mean by eternal life. People have always wanted to know what good thing they can do to get there?

Atheism: atheists believe there is no heaven.

Zoroastrianism: Zoroastrianism may be the first religion that stated that the afterlife was dependent upon one’s good deeds in life.

Baha’i: Man does not sin. Upon death, a person’s soul continues its spiritual journey.

Buddhism: Buddhism believes that heaven, or “Nirvana,” is to be rejoined in spirit with god. It requires following the Eightfold Path, including acting, speaking, and living in the right manner and with the right intentions.

Eastern Orthodox: Orthodoxy is a Christian-Judeo derivative that reinterprets key Scripture verses in such a way that works become essential to reach heaven.

Hinduism: Salvation is reached when the worshiper is freed from the cycle of reincarnation, and his spirit becomes one with god.

Islam: Muslims believe salvation comes to those who obey Allah sufficiently that good deeds outweigh the bad. Martyrdom in service to Allah is the only work guaranteed to send a worshiper to paradise.

Judaism: Jews believe they can lose their salvation, but they can also earn it back through repentance, and good deeds.

Mormonism: Mormons believe to reach the highest heaven, one must believe in God and Jesus, repent of sins, be baptized in the church, be a member of the LDS church, receive the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, obey the Mormon “Word of Wisdom” and all God’s commandments, and complete certain temple rituals including marriage. Then you give birth to spirit children who return to Earth as the souls of the living.

Roman Catholicism: Accept Christ and performed sufficient good works to go to heaven.

Scientology: Salvation is achieved through knowledge of self and the universe.

Unitarian-Universalism: Unitarians are encouraged to believe anything they like about the afterlife and how to get there. Although, they believe people should seek enlightenment in this life and not worry too much about the afterlife.

Christianity: Christianity is the only religion that teaches people are saved by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In the lists of best lists, the top ten include the Seven Wonders of the World, The Bill of Rights, the FBI's Ten Most Wanted. But the consensus pick for the number one list ever was the Ten Commandments.

Good choice? Most people would agree. Not all. Ted Turner said the Ten Commandments were obsolete: We're living with outmoded rules. The rules we're living under are the Ten Commandments, and I bet nobody here even pays much attention to 'em, because they are too old. When Moses went up on the mountain, there were no nuclear weapons, there was no poverty. Today, the Ten Commandments wouldn't go over. Nobody around likes to be commanded. Commandments are out.

Ted then modestly offered his own version which he called the Ten Voluntary Initiatives. his first two: #1, "I promise to love and respect planet Earth and all living things on the earth, especially my fellow species." Not bad. #2, "I promise to treat all persons everywhere with dignity, respect and friendliness," but that was made intriguing when he violated it in the same speech - it was just a bit later that he bashed Christians and called us losers and bozos. An interesting view from one who, while growing up, considered a career as a missionary.

The Gallup Organization has found that approximately 85% of Americans feel that the 10 Commandments are still applicable for us today. But the polls show something else too: that of the 85%, less than half can name even five of the Ten. If you don't know them it is hard to live by them.

They are a description of what it will be like to live as God's own people. *Have No other gods; no images; do not use the Lord's name foolishly; keep the sabbath; honor your father and mother; do not kill; do not steal; do not commit adultery; do not bear false witness; and do not covet. Ten commandments to define relationships between God and God's people, and between one person and another. Jesus summarized them all when he gave what has come to be known as "the Great Commandment" - You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and your neighbor as yourself.

If you think about them all in some quiet moment, you would realize that were they all obeyed, this would be a splendid world. Crime would stop - no murders, no theft. Husbands and wives would not have to worry about the faithfulness of the other. Lying and gossiping would all stop. Parents would not have to be concerned about disobedient children or how they would be supported in their old age. And the churches would be jammed because God would be preeminent in all our lives. But that quiet moment would be ruined once the News came on - Film at 11. Too bad.

The place to begin, of course, is at the beginning. Number One: Exodus 20, verse 3 - "You shall have no other gods before me."

Who is your God? Some offer their allegiance to Money...Possessions... Things. Christians are not immune. The accumulation of wealth is a national obsession.  If you are wealthy and not a child abuser people think you have arrived.

Of course, you have not arrived if Mammon becomes pre-eminent over God. The Bible says, "the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil."(7) Lying, cheating, stealing, killing...the list could go on and on (and we love our lists)...all to acquire money, possessions, things. But the worst evil of all is when they become the objects of our real worship.

Years ago, a man who had been successful in business proposed this honest epitaph for his tombstone: "Born 1878, a human being; Died, 1954, a wholesale grocer." A friend of his asked him what prompted such a request, and he replied, "I have been so busy selling groceries and amassing riches that I have pushed practically everything else out of my life. I have been successful, but so busy making a living, I never had time to live."

Have you ever wondered why God would have given this commandment in the first place? Is God insecure? Is God like some jealous teenager who would go crazy at seeing his girlfriend out with some other guy? Of course not. The God of love whom we have come to know in Jesus Christ gave this command for OUR sakes.

As Paul would go on to say, “My strength is made perfect in your weakness.” Or as the text today says, “What is impossible with men (and women) is possible with God.”

Sarai knew it when she conceived a child in her barrenness.

Joshua knew it when a horn’s cry felled Jericho.

David knew it when he took up a stone to battle Goliath.

Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego knew it when they entered the furnace.

Daniel knew it when he entered into the den of lions.

Moses knew it when he stepped in front of Pharaoh.

Jesus knew it as he hung upon the cross.

None of us enter eternal life without putting our heart in God’s hands.

The man approaching Jesus is trying his best to “attain” goodness. Jesus challenges him to “give up” on his attainment philosophy and put his “money” on faith in God.

A hard thing to do indeed.

But “what is impossible with any of us is possible with God.”

2-26-23 Don't you understand this parable?

Scripture                                                      Mark 4:13

DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS PARABLE?

IT'S OBVIOUSLY ALL ABOUT YOU - THE SOWER!

For a moment, become an amateur pastor or theologian, and see if you can give an answer to the following three questions:

1. If the gospel is the power of Godwhy doesn't everybody that hears the gospel become

a Christian?

2. If the Bible is the Word of Godwhy doesn't the Bible have the same effect on everyone

who reads it?

3. If Jesus is the Son of Godwhy doesn't everyone believe in Jesus?

If an alien were to come to planet earth and ask for a report on what god is worshiped, what religious book is followed, or even what religion is practiced, Christians would have to give a minority report because the vast majority of this world is not Christian. Major religious groups:

Islam (24.1%)   Irreligion (16%)   Hinduism (15.1%)   Buddhism (6.9%)

Folk religions (5.7%)   Sikhism (0.3%)   Judaism (0.2%) (total 67.8%)

Christianity (31.2%)

Jesus told a parable to answer all three of the previous questions. In fact, it is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is known as the parable of the sower.

As you listen to this parable you will find three main components: the Sower, the seed, and the soil. The Sower is the Christ follower, the seed is the scripture, and the soil is the soul of the unbeliever.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD

Mark 4:1-20

Again, Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge. He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:

"Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.

Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying 30, 60, or even a 100 times."

Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. He told them, "The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, "'they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!'"

13 Then Jesus said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?

The farmer sows the word.

Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.

Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop — 30, 60 or even a 100 times what was sown."

Now a seed cannot plant itself, it needs a Sower. In the parable the Sower is the Christ follower—it's you and me. That's what God has called every Christian to be—a seed Sower. Psalm 126:6 says, "He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."

DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS PARABLE?

IT'S OBVIOUSLY ALL ABOUT THE SEED - THE WORD OF GOD!

Now how do I know this? Because Jesus tells us.

In Luke 8:11 Jesus said, "The seed is the word of God." A seed is productive. The very purpose of a seed is to be planted, grow, and produce fruit. The word of God produces spiritual fruit in Christ followers. 1 Peter 1:23, "...having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever."

There is no more powerful influence that can be planted in someone's heart than that of the logos, the Word, Jesus who is found in holy scripture. We can say we are responsible to spread the word, which is true. But it would be much better to be like Jesus and turn it into a question. Is it possible, that I am qualified and so blessed that I get to spread the seed of the Word of God?

When we interpret this parable as something evangelistic - three soils that receive the word ultimately don't get the goal - salvation of the soul. That doesn't mean the word is ineffective. It means the soil is not ready to fully receive the seed - the word. Seeing this as evangelistic, we can let ourselves off the hook at least 3 out of 4 times that we sow the seed.

Jesus is using this parable to teach us what the kingdom of God is like. What if it is not about how to get into the kingdom, or about the word, but how people live by the word once they are in the kingdom?

DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THIS PARABLE?

IT'S OBVIOUSLY ALL ABOUT YOU - THE SOIL!

The real focus of this parable is not on the Sower or the seed, it's on the soil. Even the best Sower, with the best seed, will never have a harvest unless he/she has good soil. Now the soil is the soul, or the heart. Jesus said in verse 19, "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart..."

Hopefully, the reason you came to church today was to hear the Bible read, taught, and preached. I cannot over emphasize how important it is to read the Bible and hear the Bible. But listen carefully. Jesus is going to teach us that though you read the Bible with your eyes, and hear the Bible with your ears, you receive the Bible with your heart! The soil of this parable is, in fact, not about the unbeliever, but about the follower of Jesus.

Did you know the Bible is the only book ever written that requires the right heart to benefit from it? You can read a novel or a newspaper with a cold, hard, wicked, indifferent heart and get all the information you need. But the Bible is a closed book to anyone whose heart is not right with God. Jesus talks about four kinds of hearts, and they are all likely represented in every church today. You are listening to me right now with one of four kinds of hearts. I want you to identify which heart is yours as you listen to these descriptions.

I. Stubborn Hearts Reject The Word

"And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and devoured them." (v.4) When Jesus talked about the path He was talking about something similar to our sidewalks. In Israel people would walk through fields, and they would take the same path over and over again. So as many people walked along the same path, the ground would become rock hard. This was soil where the seed could not get in. It could get on the ground, but it could not get in the heart. Jesus said there are some Christian hearts just like that.

There are people who come to church every Sunday, and when they hear a sermon it goes in one ear and out the other. It literally hits them like water running off a duck's back. Their heart is a roof surrounded by gutters and all the water of the word of God just washes right off of the roof into the gutters, down the drain, and never does them any good.

Hebrews 4:7 says, "Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."

Every time you hear the truth preached it will either soften…or harden your heart. Truth is just like the sun. The same sun that melts the butter also hardens the clay.

II. Shallow Hearts Remove The Word

"Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away." (vv.5-6) If you've ever been to Israel, you know that much of Israel is limestone and bedrock that is covered over with a thin layer of soil, identical to our property at Put in Bay. Whenever you plant seed on this soil it cannot take root because though it appears to begin to grow, it runs into hard rock.

You see, the first soil was soil where seed could not get in; this is soil where seed cannot get down.

"For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles." (v 21) They're like a person who wants to march in the army as a four-star general, but when the first fighting starts, and the first bullet flies, and the first bomb hits, they are the first one to desert.

There's an article titled, 178 Seconds to Live. It was about the results of twenty pilots in a simulator. Each of the pilots were skilled aviators but had not taken instrument training. As long as the weather was good they were all experts in flight and had no trouble flying the plane. But these pilots were placed in a simulator and asked to keep their plane under control as they flew through simulated clouds and bad weather. All twenty of the pilots lost control of their planes and crashed in an average time span of just 178 seconds. These pilots who were very capable at keeping the plane aloft in good weather, couldn't survive three minutes in bad weather.

III. Strangled Hearts Restrict The Word

"And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them." (v.7)

Now the first soil was where seed could not get in. The second soil was where seed could not get down. But this is soil where the seed cannot get out. It is sown among thorns, weeds, and briars, and the life of it is literally choked out.

What did Jesus mean by this? "Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful." (v.22) There are three things, according to the Lord, that can literally choke the spiritual life out of a person, and can prevent them from having a true relationship with God.

1-There are the problems of life that we all have, and unfortunately people don't realize that Christians have problems just like non-Christians.

2-There are the prosperities of life; the tendency to make this world your home, and care everything about the world that is here, and nothing about the world to come.

3-There are the pleasures of life; the desire to make sure that you live in comfort and ease and not count the cost of following Jesus Christ.

Jesus here is describing people that probably makes up most of the church worldwide today, who are trying to hold Jesus with one hand and the world with the other. These are people who make a decision for God because they are broken over their sins, but they're never broken from their sins.

This describes a heart that was unprepared because it was so full of malignant weeds and thorns it never really allowed the seed of the gospel to bear fruit.

Many years ago there was a famous gangster who lived in Los Angeles named Mickey Cohen. He was known for several things: He was Jewish, he lived an extravagant lifestyle, and he was a friend of many of the Hollywood celebrities. He met a man by the name of Bill Jones. Bill Jones was a Christian who served time in prison and had gotten to know Mickey Cohen and began to share Jesus with him.

He finally persuaded Mickey Cohen to go to a Billy Graham Crusade. Cohen heard the gospel and prayed to receive Christ into his heart. Bill Jones was so elated! What an impact this famous gangster could have for Christ; not only because he was Jewish, but also because of the influence he could have on the underworld.     It wasn't long after his so-called profession of faith, he dropped Bill Jones and began hanging around with his underworld mobster buddies again. Well, this very much upset Jones who went to see him one day, and said, "Mickey, you're a Christian, and as a new Christian you don't need to be hanging around these mobsters anymore unless you are going to try to win them to Christ."     This is what Mickey Cohen said: "Jones, you never told me that I had to give up my career. You never told me that I had to give up my friends. You never told me I had to give up the way that I make money, and the way I stay on top of the world. I mean, after all, there are Christian movie stars, Christian athletes, and Christian businessmen; what's the matter with being a Christian gangster? If I have to give up that; if that's what Christianity is, count me out." That is exactly the kind of heart that was strangled by the prosperities and the pleasures of this world, and the spiritual life was choked out.

IV. Surrendered Hearts Reproduce The Word

"But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a 100-fold, some 60, some 30." (v.8) Here Jesus talks about a soil that is fertile and a soil that is fruitful. Now what kind of heart is this?

First of all, it is receptive to the word of God. This is a person who "hears the word." That means instead of "going in one ear and out the other" this is a person who has the word go into his ear, get into his mind, and down into his heart.

But this is also a soil that is responsive to the word of God because it not only hears it, but understands it. The word "understands" means to understand with comprehension and to be willing to do what you understand.

That's why Jesus said this soil is reproductive of the word of God because it bears fruit. That is the real key—fruit. Everything else is just talk. If the word of God is not bearing fruit in your life, you're not studying the word of God; you're not hearing the word of God; you're not receiving the word of God. You're not living the word of God!

I heard about a woman who came into the house one day and said, "Honey, we've got trouble with the car; it's got water in the carburetor." The husband said, "Water in the carburetor, that's ridiculous." She said, "I'm telling you, the car has water in the carburetor." The husband said, "You don't even know what a carburetor looks like. Where is the car?" She said, "In the swimming pool." Right actions, which the husband was missing, not only come with the right hearing, but also the right understanding.

The Gospel is the power of God, the Bible is the word of God, and Jesus is the Son of God, but you will only believe this and receive this with a surrendered heart.

There is not a greater joy in a pastor's life than to see when that very thing happens.

Some time ago, a pastor got a call that a man in Laurel, Mississippi died. Interestingly, his name was also Cohen, and like Mickey Cohen he was Jewish. But his story had a different ending.

The church where this pastor served sponsored a Starlite Crusade, and had invited Terry Bradshaw, who at that time was the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, to come and give his testimony, after which this pastor was going to preach.

He writes, we were meeting in the football stadium. Unbeknownst to me, a man by the name of Pacey Cohen was driving by that stadium on his way home to commit suicide. He didn't even know the crusade was going on. But he saw the big marquee out front that said, "Hear Terry Bradshaw, Quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers." Well, it just so happened that Pacey Cohen was a big Steelers fan. So he pulled into the parking lot, walked into the football stadium, went up into the stands, and his intention was to hear Bradshaw, enjoy one last slice of life, and go home and blow his brains out.

After Bradshaw finished, there was really nothing to keep Pacey Cohen there, but he said later for some reason he didn't get up and leave. He had never heard the gospel or the Bible preached in his life. I got up and preached a simple gospel message and gave the invitation.

Pacey was sitting on the very top row of those bleachers, and inside he was literally dying because the Holy Spirit of God was moving on his hard heart. At first he did not respond. Then before we sang the last stanza of the invitation, I looked up into the stands and said, "There is someone here that tonight will be your last night on earth if you do not come and give your heart to Jesus Christ. If you do not come tonight you will spend eternity separated from God." Now the amazing thing is, Pacey swore I was looking him right in the eye. But I don't remember it, and besides there were 3,000 people there that night.

Pacey stepped out, and I will never forget it because out of that 3,000 people, even though we already had close to 70 people saved that night, he was the only one who came forward on the last verse. He gave his life to Christ and joined our church. I baptized him, and can you believe this—he became a full-time evangelist for Christ.

His wife told me when I called her that even though he was dying of lung cancer and could only breathe sixty seconds without an oxygen mask, that on the Monday before he died, he led his nurse to Jesus Christ. God took a stubborn heart, moved it to a shallow heart, moved it to a strangled heart, and changed it to a surrendered heart. What he did for Pacey he can do for anyone, and he can do it for you.

The parable of the sower and the seed reminds us of the need for faith and faithfulness. This parable raises the question, "What is the Kingdom of God like? Is it like four soils?"

Who first named this the “parable of the Sower?” The only worse title might be the “parable of the seed.” Why either “Sower” or “seed”? The “Sower” has no presence in this parable whatsoever. The Sower does his/her job and moves on. Likewise the quality of the “seed” is never at issue in this parable. The “parable of the Sower” is really all about the soil. The soil is the only thing that can change - meaning your heart is the only thing that can change in this parable of Jesus.

CONCLUSION

1 Corinthians 3:5-9

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe — as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field.

What kind of soil is your heart today?

Like a hard path and you believe but want nothing else of Christ and His word in your

life?

Like the rocky soil, you believe but you spend so little time in fellowship with Jesus and

his word that you quickly dry up and just stay that way?

Like a plant that is growing, you are among thorns and briars and allow the cares of the world to choke out what could be an amazing spiritual journey?

Or, is your heart the way Jesus wants it to be, like good soil? Good soil is where your life is producing Holy Spirit fruit that will last and produce 30, 60, or even 100 times what you could have ever imagined?

How do you answer Jesus today? Don't you understand this parable?
