11-25-18 Change is Inherent in Making All Things New!

Scripture  Ecclesiastes 4:1-13
(Slide Change 7)

How many of you don’t like change? It is a good thing God didn’t ask us about that before He created the world. No change you face will ever be as great as when God spoke light into darkness and life into a lump of clay. Here the word of the Lord:  (Slide Change 5)

Ecclesiastes 3:1-13
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
9 What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil — this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

Solomon having shown the vanity of studies, pleasures, and business, and that happiness is not to be found in these things, in chapter 3 says we should cheerfully content ourselves with, and make use of, what God has given us, including the fact that change is inherent in God making all things new - birth-death, planting-harvesting, be silent-speak up, gather stones-scatter stones (commentary on stones - let’s call those stones = change).
(SLIDE - Change 3)

Every tick of the clock brings you closer to death - says the pessimist. Every tick of the clock gives me one more moment to enjoy the life God has given me - says the optimist. You face change every second of your life - fight it - embrace it - or as much as you are able, determine what that change will be. Personally, the biggest change you ever faced occurred 9 months after you were conceived. Any changes you face have been faced by others before you and will be faced by others when you are gone - change is not unique to you: Eccl 3:14a Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before.

My hope is that today’s message will inspire some of us to move from disliking change to embracing change and move those who embrace change to determine change. Though the heart of who we are as a church has remained constant over many years - how we look and do ministry has changed significantly and will continue to do so, therefore as a collective people I say together, let’s determine what that change will be and not allow Satan or the world or lethargy determine that for us. That will not end well - like the guy who went to the doctor…
"You," the doctor said to the patient, "are in terrible shape. You've got to make some serious changes in your life. First, tell your wife to cook more nutritious meals. Stop working like a dog. Also, inform your wife you're going to make a budget, and she has to stick to it. And have her keep the kids off your back so you can relax. Unless there are some changes like that in your life, you'll probably be dead in a month."
"Doc," the patient said, "this would sound more official coming from you. Could you please call my wife and give her those instructions?"
When the man got home, his wife rushed to him and said, "I talked to your doctor. Honey, what horrible news, you only have thirty days to live."
Don’t let the change happen - make change happen - but make it God’s change - God wants to do a new things in you… (Slide Change 4)

SEE, I AM DOING A NEW THING
Isaiah 43:16-21  This is what the Lord says — he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.

BIGGEST TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE
Thomas Kempis said: “Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.” That goes for people as well as systems.
That is a hard pill to swallow for a pastor because much of our life is spent trying to convince people how they ought to change and become more Christ like. Pastors (and everyone else) have enough trouble trying to change themselves let alone anyone else. Tolstoy said: “Everybody thinks of changing Humanity and Nobody thinks of changing Himself.

I wonder how many people feel like The Duke of Cambridge who in the late 1800s said: "Any change, at any time, for any reason, is to be deplored." I know how many. 16% of people feel that way - at least if we believe Howard Hendricks when he wrote in the Monday Morning Mission:
5 Kinds of Attitudes About Change
1. Early innovators (2.6%), run with new ideas
2. Early adaptors (13.4%), influenced by (1) but not initiators
3. Slow Majority (34%), the herd-followers
4. Reluctant Majority (34%)
5. Antagonistic (16%), they will never change
Hendricks says the majority of ministers are being nibbled at by the last group. They focus on the minority opinion. This group is basically carnal. You expect antagonism from them.
(Slide Change 6)

*Everyone doesn’t have to be in favor of change for change to happen. Behavioral studies show that if 2% of a homogeneous group are strongly dedicated to a given cause, that small minority can eventually move the whole.

Issac Newton’s First Law of Motion is: “Everything continues in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change by forces impressed upon it.” If the group begins to move with those leading who believe they have somewhere to go, the group will move as well.

Someone once said: “Nothing is ever done until everyone is convinced that it ought to be done, and has been convinced for so long that it is now time to do something else.” I am ok with change for change sakes but I rarely do that in the church. If I am a part of change - especially if I am the one initiating it - it is for what I believe to be the purpose and the will of God.

Openness is essentially the willingness to grow, a distaste for ruts, eagerly standing on tip-toe for a better view of what tomorrow brings. A man once bought a new radio, brought it home, placed it on the refrigerator, plugged it in, turned it to WSM in Nashville (home of the Grand Ole Opry), and then pulled all the knobs off! He had already tuned in all he ever wanted or expected to hear. Some marriages are "rutted" and rather dreary because either or both partners have yielded to the tyranny of the inevitable, "what has been will still be." Stay open to newness. Stay open to change.
(Slide Change 4)

I can’t fathom where my life would be today if Christ hadn’t come in and changed me. Jesus is still changing me - the fruit of the spirit still needs a lot of ripening in my life. I have 3 college degrees that are beneficial but I in no way have stopped learning. I have neem a pastor for 33 years but I still have changes to make to become a better pastor. Or, I can just hope everything freezes and stays like it is till the day I retire and then I will make some changes. NO WAY! I will not settle for how things have been nor how they are - I will seek to follow Jesus who’s Word says, See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.  And Luke 5:38 new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And Eph 4:22-24 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. And Ps 98:1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. And Luke 22:20 This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. And Rev 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, "BEHOLD! I am making all things new!" And finally, 2 Cor 5:17-18  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.
I am willing to change as often as need be an ambassador for Christ to the world who knows him not! Are you willing to change for the sake of Christ? Are we willing to go wherever He leads us for There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven - this is the gift of God!

11-18-18 Hallelujah! Yes! Praise the Lord!

Scripture   Psalm 150 (LIV BIB)

Hallelujah =
interjection --- used to express praise, joy, or thanks
noun --- A shout or song of praise or thanksgiving
Praise You Yahweh, frequently rendered "Praise the LORD," stands at the beginning of ten of the psalms (106,111-113,135,146-150), hence called "hallelujah psalms." From its frequent occurrence it grew into a formula of praise. The Greek form of the word (alleluia) is found only in Revelation 19:1 Revelation 19:3 Revelation 19:4 Revelation 19:6 .
What about those times you don’t feel like saying Hallelujah?  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Be joyful always; pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

When Handel wrote the "Hallelujah Chorus," his health and his fortunes had reached the lowest possible ebb. His right side had become paralyzed, and all his money was gone. He was heavily in debt and threatened with imprisonment. He was tempted to give up the fight. The odds seemed entirely too great. And it was then he composed his greatest work--Messiah
Out of his darkness he wrote a song The Hallelujah Chorus which cause the audience along with the king to stand in praise of the Lord God Omnipotent - the Lord of lords and King of kings.

Revelation 19:1-6
After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:
"Hallelujah!
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and just are his judgments.
He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants."
And again they shouted:
"Hallelujah!
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever."
The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried: "Amen, Hallelujah!"
Then a voice came from the throne, saying:
"Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, both small and great!"
Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: "Hallelujah!

11-11-18 Becoming the Soldier’s Shield

Scripture   1 Samuel 12:23
When someone is in danger, Christians are obligated to become a shield for them. During the sermon at my ordination, Steve Harvey called me a soldier for Christ. The reason a soldier does what he or she does is not to kill, rather to defend. The shield is the greatest symbol of military defense. So, let’s see what this soldier’s shield looks like in scripture -in history and what that means for us.

Our text today is set in the time when the prophet Samuel is giving his farewell speech. In this speech Samuel confronts the people with evidence of the righteous acts performed by the Lord for the people of God. (1 Samuel 12:7) Samuel tells the people, If you fear the Lord and serve and obey Him and do not rebel against His commands and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God – Good! But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against His commands, His hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.” (1 Samuel 12:14-15)
It was harvest time and Samuel called upon the Lord to send thunder and rain so they would know what a great evil they had done in the eyes of the Lord when they asked for a king to rule over them as the other nations had kings (1 Samuel 12:17). The same day Samuel prayed, the…Lord sent thunder and rain and all the people stood in awe of the Lord. (1 Samuel 12:18) Listen to the response of the people to Samuel, “…Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to our sins the evil of asking for a king.” (1 Samuel 12:19)
After a few more instructions, Samuel tells the people, “For the sake of His great name the Lord will not reject His people, because the Lord was pleased to make you His own.” (1 Samuel 12:22) These words of promise lead us to our key verse: 1 Samuel 12:23, As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord for failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

When those whose lives are in danger ask for prayer, it would be a sin to fail to pray for them. Christians can take their rightful place among such giants of intercession like Moses, (Exodus 32;30-32) Daniel, (Daniel 9:15-17  Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our fathers have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us. Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary) the apostle Paul (Romans 1:9-10) And Jesus. (Romans 8:34 who is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.)

Are Christians called to pray for each other and for those who risk their lives for their country? Absolutely. I would add that we must not only pray for those who serve our military but those men and women in blue who now must defend us from terrorists on our own soil. This week at a country bar in California Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year police veteran, was among the dead, Helus, 54, was one of the first on the scene and was struck multiple times when he entered the building. What makes this even worse today is that the shooter, 28-years-old, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
The Christian’s call is to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). We sin when we restrain prayer in general, and in particular when we cease to pray for those who ask for it.
Even though Samuel would no longer have political leadership, he still had spiritual influence through prayer. Christians do not need to have authority over those who serve in the armed forces and who are in harm’s way, but they most certainly can have a spiritual influence through heartfelt prayer. James 5:16 says: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Christians cannot forget the nation the Lord has led them into or called them to serve Him in. Nor should they fail to intercede for the men and women whom God raises up to protect the freedoms He has given them.
Christians must resist that temptation of omission in prayer because they become weary of the nation’s continued descent into sin. The prophet Samuel saw the sins of the people, yet committed to pray for them because he did not want to sin against the Lord. The most influential work done for the Hebrews was the teaching of God’s Word and the prayers that came from great intercessors such as Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and King David. These powerful intercessors did not just leave the people of God to their own course – to sow as they pleased and reap as they had sown. They did not withdraw from their responsibility, but interceded with all their hearts before a merciful God who could bring a people to repentance, protect them from their enemies and empower them to accomplish His perfect will.
The Holy Spirit moved the church to pray for Peter when he was in harm’s way before King Herod. (Acts 12:5) The Bible records the Apostle Paul’s intercession in prayer for Timothy night and day, for he would face godlessness and (2 Timothy 3) false teachers (2 Timothy 1:3; 1 Timothy 4 and 6) The Christians in Colossae were in great danger of heretical teaching and the Bible says Paul never stopped praying for them. (Colossians 1:9)
I can’t help but wonder about all those who spend much time complaining - in the past about Obama, Bush, Clinton and now Trump would instead spend that same time on their knees acting as a shield for them in prayer - how different our country might be today. They serve as commander and chief for the greatest military in the world and make decisions about our military men and women that can put them in harm’s way to defend us. It makes sense then for us to become a soldier’s shield for them by praying for them. The same principal applies to those who are in harm’s way on a spiritual front.  The Bible says Samuel cried out to God on Israel’s behalf. (1 Samuel 7:9) We must do the same for people who are dying without Christ in their lives because the world is working diligently to harm them. The Israelites found victory after Samuel’s prayer. Many will be saved because you are willing to pray for the souls of those who do not yet know eternal victory in Christ.

History records powerful truths of God’s intervention for armed forces as people take time to pray for those in harm’s way.
In May of 1940, Germany was on the move and it was unbelievable how much control Hitler got over Europe. Hitler had backed up nearly all the remaining Allied troops to the beach at Dunkirk, France. Our Allied troops were surrounded. Ten miles to their rear was the German army. In front of them the English Channel.
An evacuation by water was their only hope however, it would not be easy. The English Channel was known for her terrible tides and treacherous winds. She was full of German mines and down the beach was Nazi artillery. The only other direction to go held German U-boats. 400,000 Allied troops were at Dunkirk and one English General said, “Nothing but a miracle could save them.”
It was at this time the Holy Spirit moved upon Reece Howell and a group of 100 students in a Welsh Bible College to become intercessors for those who were in harm’s way of Hitler’s armed forces. They prayed from 7:00 P.M. to 12:00 Midnight. While those Welsh Bible students prayed, the British Royal Navy rounded up practically everything that floated in England to go rescue the troops.
During the rescue attempt there were several miracles. First, Hitler, for some mysterious reason stopped the Panzer tanks just 10 miles away. If he had kept moving he could have done great damage to our Allied Forces or destroyed them completely. Second, for an unheard of 9 days, the English Channel was perfectly calm, smooth as glass. Old-timers said, “We have never seen it like this before.”
Heavy fog sometimes moved in and at other times smoke from burning oil fields drifted calmly towards the beach, thus, keeping the German air-force from seeing anything from the air during the evacuation. When the evacuation off the beach was finished, 338,000 Allied troops were rescued. The other 62,000 soldiers gave their lives, so their fellow soldiers could get off the beach. They fought the oncoming Nazi Armed Forces when they finally made their move to attack again.

It is because of that kind of sacrifice we take time to observe Veterans’ Day. It is because of God responding to the prayers of great intercessors that we enjoy the freedom that we have in America today.
President Abraham Lincoln, in a National Proclamation of Prayer and Repentance in 1863 wrote, “We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us! It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”
Veterans’ Day was set aside for us to remember the cost of those who gave their lives and time for the freedoms we enjoy in America. This is right because many of our Veterans bear the scars of war, some physically and mentally. It is our hope that no one would take for granted the cost paid by those who sacrificed so much so we can live as we do.
As we take time to honor our Veterans may we not forget the cost paid by the perfect Veteran, of the worst foreign war, Jesus Christ. He bore public shame and His sacrifice got victory over the physical, mental and spiritual wounds of the war for people’s souls. The weapons of the flesh, and the lies of the devil were afflicted upon the sinless Christ who in that moment became a soldier’s shield as he prayed “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
That is our example - if Jesus would pray for those who are enemies of the cross as he is dying on that cross, how much more should we at least pray for those in harm’s way defending our country overseas and right here in our community?

Ephesians 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

11-4-18 There is one issue on which you MUST VOTE!

Scripture  Joshua 24:14-15  (Reader's Theater style)
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. Joshua said to all the people
"This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods. But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out. When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea.  But they cried to the Lord for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the desert for a long time. I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you. But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand. Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you — also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.'
14 "Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
          Then the people answered,
"Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God."

Joshua said to the people,
"You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you."
But the people said to Joshua,
"No! We will serve the Lord."
Then Joshua said,
"You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord."
"Yes, we are witnesses,"
they replied. Then Joshua said,
"Now then, throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel."
And the people said to Joshua,
"We will serve the Lord our God and obey him."
On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he drew up for them decrees and laws. And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord. He said to all the people,
"See! This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God."
Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance. After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.

Until the 1960’s with the age of authoritarian defiance, people often came to faith in Christ with a single exposure - such as a Billy Graham crusade or a church revival. Since then and even more today, putting your faith in Jesus Christ for the salvation of your soul typically involves a long process. That being said, there does need to come a time when a person decides one way or the other. I 100% believe that Jesus is who the scriptures say he is or I do not. The issue of salvation is not one that you can be ambivalent about…forever.
It can be a process leading up to the moment of salvation - but there is a mark on the time line of your life where you make that decision, and following that mark is working out what that salvation means and looks like in this life.  Phil 2:12-13  Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
First you were in a process of believing until that moment of decision and in that instant, you then belonged to Christ’s eternal family and since that moment you are now becoming what God has fashioned you to become from the beginning.
There are those who think salvation itself is a process. It is not. Jesus died at a split second in real human history. Only in that moment did salvation become possible. When you decide that you believe that, trust in that, choose to live your life based on that fact, it is a moment in time when that happens. Now, I will say, not everyone can point to that exact moment. Many people grow up in Christian homes and cannot remember a time of not believing in Christ. Somewhere, that belief went from the parents’ belief to your own - it became the difference in believing in those things that are fun for children to believe in from a secular point of view at Christmas and Easter to knowing the fact that Jesus was born, died and rose form the dead!

God chose Shechem as the first place in Canaan to appear to Joshua. Previously, Shechem was the site where Jacob and his entourage renounced other gods, burying their idols and idolatrous jewelry under the landmark oak.
Joshua’s Voice   God’s message
Joshua launches the proceeding by addressing the assembled crowd. His first words are the so-called messenger formula (“Thus says the LORD”), the standard phrase invoked to introduce a verbatim message from God. It clearly signals that the sound the assembly hears may be Joshua’s, but the voice speaking is in fact that of Yahweh. Indeed, this marks Yahweh’s lone, personal, direct address to assembled Israel in the book of Joshua.
The people know the story well: It marks the beginning of Yahweh’s connection with them as a people.  What typifies those ancestors is that they “served other gods”. The driving theme of the speech concerns Israel’s exclusive devotion to Yahweh alone.
That means that Israel’s possession of the land is God’s gift, pure and simple Israel had a hand neither in the land’s conquest nor in its construction (v. 13). Yahweh generously handed over to Israel ready-made fields, vineyards, and olive groves to feed themselves, and ready-made cities in which to live. In short, the defeat of Canaan and the land gift are all Yahweh’s doing. They mark the capstone of the stunning saga of salvation that he has singlehandedly orchestrated for Israel’s benefit since the call of Abram.
WHAT SALVATION LOOKS LIKE
You want to know what salvation looks like look no farther than Joshua 24. God did not just give them a plot of ground, he gave them orchards, cultivated fields, wells already dug, cisterns with water in them, homes and buildings for businesses, city centers and everything they needed to settle into the “promised land.”  You come to faith a wretched and poor sinner far from God, yet the moment you make your decision for him you are not only forgiven of your sins, you are given an inheritance into the eternal promised land - not just a space in heaven but a heaven already prepared and fashioned for you with everything you need to live eternally. John 14:1-4  “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” Rev 21:1-5  “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, "BEHOLD! I am making all things new!
God’s speech to the people is personal = “I-you”
Joshua will draw out the logical implications of Yahweh’s historical review. A shift from indicative to imperative mood also occurs.  Israel must both “worship” God to treat him with the highest respect and “serve” him i.e. to carry out his wishes as would a loyal servant.
“Put away (other gods)” is a stock phrase meaning radically to renounce loyalty to other deities and exclusively to embrace Yahweh - the one true God. Jacob demanded it of his entourage upon his return to Canaan from Haran, and Samuel will do so as well.
Israel’s ancestors were polytheists (the worship of many gods), adding gods to their worship roster wherever they went. Israel may serve Yahweh or their ancestors’ gods, but not both; polytheism is no longer an option.
In demanding a choice, Joshua mirrors the pattern of Moses, who made a similar passionate plea before Israel entered Canaan. Here Joshua asks for commitment from the present generation, the first one in Israel’s history to occupy the Promised Land. But his words also confront readers today with a similar choice: Is Jesus your Lord or not?
          Choose today!
          We choose God!
You can’t God is holy and jealous and if you still serve other God’s He will drop you like a hot rock!
We will forsake other gods and serve Yahweh only!
Then you must get rid of all foreign idols - destroy them and wipe them out of your life!
          We will!

It is just believing but believing means action - means change - means giving up anything that you would put before God. Destroying it and removing it from your life. That is working out our salvation.

Just like the stone they set up when you come to faith in Christ you have witnesses to remind you of your commitment to worship and serve only Him. Christianity is serious business - it is not just holding hands with hippie Jesus and singing Kumbaya -it is putting Jesus on the throne of your heart and making him Lord of your whole life.

I believe polytheism is stronger in the US today than it has been anywhere at any time in history. Contemporary Culture says - no demands - that everyone not only be accepting of all people’s beliefs but must embrace them and agree with them. My bible says Deut 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Matt 6:24  "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.  John 14:6  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

TODAY IS THE DAY YOU MUST VOTE!

To believe in and follow Jesus means to live by his teaching, follow his example, and do what he asks of you. Choose you this day whom you will serve, as for me and my house we will serve the Lord! Zacchaeus-today salvation has come to this house - thief on the cross-today you will be with me in paradise / 2 Cor 6:2 I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
