4-9-23 Why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?

 Scripture     John 20:1-19

JESUS DIED

Philippians 2:5-8 (AMP version)    Jesus: who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained, But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross!

JESUS DIED! HOWEVER…

John 20:1-19

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb… Mary Magdalene = The only person, mentioned in all 4 gospels, that she was present at the crucifixion. She was an important figure to the rest of the disciples to be mentioned this way She knew where the tomb was because after he was crucified, she followed and watched where they had laid him. The other gospel writers list several women who went to the tomb together and found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty but no sign of Jesus. John as well as Mark list Mary Magdalene as the first to see Jesus. At some point, she found herself alone at the tomb.  Mark 16:9-11 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.  Mary Magdalene was THE premiere female disciple who supported Jesus' work and is present more than any other female. Different from Mary his mother. Different from his friends Mary of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Mary Magdalene was a disciple in every sense of the word.

Mary Magdalene went to the tomb…and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" (We don't know who she means by "They" she could be referring to the Roman military or politicians, or to the Jewish Religious leaders.

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"

"They have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

"Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?"

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."

          Jesus said to her, "Mary."

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).

Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. (It doesn't mean she didn't hug him. He means, don't try and keep me here physically. That is not the plan.) Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" (That is a huge statement - I am still alive, but not to spend more time with you like we have for the past 3 years.)

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her. ("Do not hold on to me, for I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.")

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" (Mary Magdalene appears to be the only one who had a private audience with Jesus after his resurrection.)

That is all great information about Mary Magdalene, but I share it only insomuch as she is the most credible witness to Jesus' crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.  This sermon is not about Mary Magdalene, it is about the risen Christ and what that means for you and me.

What does resurrection mean for us?

Eternal life is real and available! Heaven is our destination.

Do you remember what it was like in your mother's womb?  You were very much alive but not yet 'born'.  Remember hearing the voices of your parents - mom and dad who were arguing about what your name would be/Or your grandparents talking about all the things they would buy and provide for you? Or maybe you remember hearing your older siblings being upset that you were going to be born and take attention away from them? Do you remember thinking I just want to stay right here where it is comfortable, relatively quiet, and certainly warm and protective?  When you thought about being out there - out where they were - out in that 'other world' it sometimes seemed wonderful and other times scary. Mostly it just seemed like a mystery. In fact, you had no idea how different that world would be until when? Until you were born into that world - until you were actually there and experienced it.

What do you imagine heaven is like?  Your only frame of reference is this temporary finite fallen world you live in right now. Oh sure, we have some hints in the Bible but they are few and far between to give us a full picture of heaven. If we truly believe heaven is so much more wonderful than our current existence, why do any of us hold on to this life at all costs? Our view of heaven from our current vantage point is no better than the view of an earthly existence from inside the womb - for 2 reasons. 1) We cannot see it yet and 2) just like a baby doesn't have the mental ability to conceive what it might be like, we don’t have the spiritual capacity to truly know what heaven will be like.

Besides knowing Jesus has constructed a dwelling for us, and there will be no more crying, mourning or pain, or death; we really only know one important thing about heaven for sure - Jesus will be there! Jesus' question of Mary at the empty tomb is the same question Jesus asks us as we stand in this life looking forward to the life to come "Who is it you are looking for?" The only answer and the only thing we need to know about heaven is the answer to that question - JESUS!

From your current vantage point can you imagine what heaven will be like? Streets of gold, a crystal sea, gems making the walls. 24 elders bowing down lying their crowns before Jesus? Can you imagine truly being in the presence of God Almighty face to face and seeing His joy because of your faith and those whom you helped lead to faith? Can you imagine that God has given us an eternity to discover all that heaven has to offer? There is so much more than you could ever imagine, but like your first realization of this new world when you ere born was just being with your parents, so too, you can imagine what it will be like in those first moments in heaven as we get to spend face to face time with Jesus!

SING I can only imagine

Remember as we imagine heaven that God is on both sides of the grave! He is in heaven and by His Spirit He is here with us now. Until that day we are united with him through our own resurrection, we need to praise him and proclaim Him here and now as Jesus Messiah!

Joseph Haroutunian was a beloved Presbyterian seminary professor who taught at the McCormick Seminary in Chicago for many years. Over the years wonderful stories have been told by former students. The famous author John Killinger who taught with him told the story.

Haroutunian was an immigrant from Armenia to this country. When he arrived here his accent was very strong. Someone took him aside and said, "Look, Haroutunian, your accent is a problem, but you can do something about that. Your name, though, is something else. Nobody can spell Haroutunian, which will be a handicap to you professionally in this country. So, why don't you change your name to Harwood or Harwell, something like that?"

Joe looked at the man for a moment and he asked, "What do they mean? What do you mean? Those names, Harwood and Harwell. What do they mean?" The man said, "Well, nothing. They're just easier to pronounce and to spell than Haroutunian." Then Haroutunian said this: "Back in Armenia when my grandfather was baptized they named him Haroutun, which means 'Resurrection.' And when my father was born they named him Haroutunian, which means 'Son of Resurrection.' My name also means 'Son of Resurrection.' I am Joseph Haroutunian and I will be a son of resurrection all of my days."

4-16-23 Do you love me?

Scripture      John 21:1-25

DRAMA READING: Peter fearful of his beach conversation with Jesus (p147)

SONG: Build my life

MESSAGE: "Do you love me?"

Have you ever been in need of grace? Have you ever felt unworthy of God's love?

Why do we ever feel unworthy of God's, or anyone's love? We have not loved them by our actions or inactions. With God, we call that sin. Sin is anything that separates us from God. And, sin did separate God from us. But through the cross, God stays with us through all things, even when we sin, he still loves us.

Romans 5:6-8     You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

That kind of love has a Greek name = Agape

It is a love that creatively and compassionately works for the benefit of someone else.

Does God work creatively and compassionately for the benefit of someone else? YES - that is Agape love. That is the highest form of love? Who does God love with Agape love? Sinners - you and me. Peter - even after denying him 3 times.

How does God want us to love Him? With that same kind of Agape love. We are to love God creatively and compassionately working for His benefit.  That is what Jesus was asking Peter. Peter, will you love me creatively and compassionately by working for my benefit? YES LORD he says 3 times. And Jesus gives him his work to do; "Feed my lambs, Take care of my sheep, Feed my sheep!"

Just as God's agape love in Christ for us was Jesus giving his life for us while we were his enemies, our agape love for Jesus will sometimes look exactly like that: AGAPE LOVE = Matthew 5:43-48  "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

COME TO THE ALTAR

Are you hurting and broken within? Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin?
Do you thirst for a drink from the well? Jesus is calling

O come to the altar The Father's arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes. Come today, there's no reason to wait
Jesus is calling
Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy, from the ashes, a new life is born

John 21

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.  9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.

18 I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go."  19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?"

22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me."  23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"

24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

04-02-23 Why are you untying it?

Scripture          Luke 19:29-31, Matthew 21:4-5, Luke 19:32-34, Mark 11:7-10

INTRODUCTION

It is Palm Sunday and Jesus is coming into Jerusalem riding a white stallion…

Here is how it really happened:

Luke 19:29-31 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.'"

Matthew 21:4-5  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

Luke 19:32-34 32  Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They replied, "The Lord needs it."

Mark 11:7-10  7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest!"

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is anything you have that the Lord needs

IT COSTS EVERYTHING

A man sees a pearl of amazing size and beauty in a jewelry shop.

He says to the merchant, “I want this pearl. How much is it?” The seller says, “It’s very expensive.” “How much?” “A lot!” “Well, do you think I could buy it?” the man asks. “Oh, yes,” says the merchant, “everyone can buy it.” “But I thought you said it was very expensive.” “I did.” “Well, how much?” “Everything you have,” says the seller. “All right, I’ll buy it.” “Okay, what do you have?” “Well, I have $10,000 in the bank.” “Good, $10,000. What else?” “That’s all I have.” “Nothing more?” “Well, I have a few dollars more in my pocket.” “How much?” “Let’s see … $100.” “That’s mine, too,” says the seller. “What else do you have?” “That’s all, nothing else.” “Where do you live?” the seller asks. “In my house. Yes, I own a home.” The seller writes down, 'house.' “It’s mine.” “Where do you expect me to sleep—in my camper?” “Oh, you have a camper, do you? That, too. What else?” “Am I supposed to sleep in my car?” “Oh, you have a car?” “Yes, I own two of them.” “They’re mine now.” “Look, you’ve taken my money, my house, my camper, and my cars. Where is my family going to live?” “So, you have a family?” “Yes, I have a wife and three kids.” “They’re mine now.” Suddenly the seller exclaims, “Oh, I almost forgot! You yourself, too! Everything becomes mine—wife, children, house, money, cars, and you, too.” Then he goes on, “Now, listen, I will allow you to use all these things for the time being. But don’t forget that they’re all mine, just as you are. And whenever I need any of them, you must give them up, because I am now the owner.

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is any sin that so easily entangles you

1 John 1:8-9

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

WHY ARE YOU UNTYING "IT"?

"It" is any thought or emotion that has you bound

Dr. Maxwell Maltz is a plastic surgeon. Listen as he describes how physical deformities can be mild compared to our inner emotional and thought deformities:

"One day many years ago a woman in her mid-twenties came to my offices. She had a deep indented scar on her left cheek, a constant reminder of an automobile accident she'd been in. She looked unhappy, with herself and her life."

"'Who wouldn't be, in her situation,' I asked myself. As a kid, looking in the mirror when she brushed her teeth or combed her hair, she saw a perfectly normal face and began to take it for granted. Now, when she looks in the mirror, she must think, `Oh no, I look awful! I used to have a normal face, now I have two entirely different cheeks.'"

"I told her that I'd remove the scar and, after surgery, she'd look fine once again. `Don't worry,' I said, `We'll take good care of you.'"

She asked how she would look, and I reassured her and tried to soothe her fears. Later, I operated on her.

After a week's time, she came back. I took the bandages off and handed her a mirror. Her scarred cheek was a thing of the past.

Then I waited for her reaction. Many patients are overjoyed when they first see their new, improved image. But her reaction was uncertain; she expressed no real positive emotion. I waited a few seconds, then said, "What do you think? Do you like it?"

She responded, `I really don't see any improvement.'

I was stunned. My surgery had been totally successful. `Would you like to see the pictures of your face before the operation?'

She looked at the "before" pictures, then surveyed her new face in the hand mirror.

"`It looks better,' she admitted, `but I don't feel better!'"

Cases such as this one (and there have been many!) help us understand that all scars cannot be seen, that some are deeply embedded, worse than physical scars, they are inside us and infinitely painful.

Dr. Maltz concluded, "here is where our greatest needs lie, not on the outside of us, but on the inside. That, of course, is the meaning of the Gospel."

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

Our inner darkness can cloud our understanding of our sins that need forgiveness and can hide things in our life that can be used by God. We need to untie those things in the darkness and give them to Jesus so our darkness will be turned to light, our sins will be forgiven and our lives will be used in greater measure for the will and purpose of Jesus Christ!

"Why are you untying it? Because Jesus needs it - Jesus needs you!"

CONCLUSION

Do you have trouble believing that a humble messiah riding into town on a donkey 2000+ years ago can help you untie your thoughts, emotions, sin, possessions and abilities. That same Jesus will come riding into town again much closer to the way I described at the beginning.

Revelation 19:11-16

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice, he judges and makes war.   His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

3-19-23 "How long shall I put up with you?"

Scripture                                              Matthew 17:14-20

Have you ever felt that way? I have felt that way many times; "How long shall I put up with you?"  I have no doubt Jesus has looked at me over the past 48 years and with great aspiration has said, "Jeff, how long shall I put up with you?"

Matt 17:14-20

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."

17 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

We talk about faith, but how much has our faith grown beyond belief in eternal life?

Answer 1 - Jesus will put up with us as long as there are people to be saved.

2 Peter 3:8-9  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Answer 2 - Until our faith has grown to produce results for building His church.

Luke 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"

Jesus is waiting for us to ACT on our FAITH. Jesus never says what the disciples dream of doing or hope to be doing. In fact, the Bible calls the book about them "The ACTS of the Apostles". Faith is never evident in a void.

James 2:14-17  (NIV)  What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 2:14-17  (MSG)    Dear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup — where does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

When Jesus said, "You could not heal him because your faith is too little." He did not mean they did not believe enough - he meant they did not "DO" enough. "Do what you pray!"

Lynne Fuller  - I have faith we need a women's Bible study - after telling her several times to do it, finally her faith became real and she is doing what she thought she could never do - she started and is leading a tremendous women's Bible Study - THAT is faith!

NIKE did not originate the phrase, "Just Do It!" Coming back to God from living in exile, many Jewish men married foreign women and took on their culture. God wanted a pure people and told them to get rid of all foreign women and children Ezra 10:4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and (just) do it!

Jesus is saying to these disciples, You could not heal him because you didn't ACT in faith.

Not only do it - but do it without complaint

Not only do it and without complaint but do it with joy and edification

FAITH IS ACTION WITHOUT COMPLAINING

Philippians 2:12-18

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you hold out the word of life — so that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Lack of faith is not the problem - we all have faith which is why we are sitting on these chairs, why we put gas in the car, why we get into an airplane. Lack of faith is not the problem - living that faith - acting on that faith is the problem. Two-thirds of the world and 50 percent of all church members will not even roll out of bed on Sunday morning. They don't need more faith, they just need to roll out of bed and get to church!

ILLUSTRATION JEWELRY SHOP IN ISRAEL

Robert C. Morgan in his book, LIFT HIGH THE CROSS, tells about a woman who has a gift shop on the Via Doloroso in Jerusalem. Her name is Frieda Hannah. Frieda is a Palestinian Christian. She makes beautiful embroidery and cross-stitch work. Her specialties are altar paraments, clergy stoles, and Bible markers. She is a very frail woman. She has been in business at the same spot, the sixth station of the cross, for more than thirty years. Her eyes are beginning to fail her. She must wear thick glasses. If you go by Frieda's shop you will see her smiling and greeting the tourists. She has made friends with thousands.

A teacher tells about being in her shop one day with a group of students. Another large group of pilgrims from America were in the shop, too. All of the members of this second group had their Bibles under their arms and crosses hanging from their necks. They were pushing and shoving, demanding to be waited on. A group of little Palestinian beggars had followed the group into the shop asking for money. These "Christian" tourists were indignant. The teacher said they made comments like, "Get these dirty kids out of here." Or, "Why don't they stay in Jordan where they belong?"

Frieda overheard these remarks. The teacher was embarrassed and apologized for his fellow Americans, even though he did not even know them. Frieda's response was, "Oh, that is all right. I learned a long time ago that many of those who [take] the Bible literally don't take it seriously."

Frieda certainly takes the Bible seriously. During the last thirty years, using the earnings from her little shop, she has given over 1,000 Palestinian youth a higher education in North America or Europe. She has built and supported the operation of three medical clinics in the West Bank. She has built and operates two orphanages. There is no way of determining the good that this Christian woman has done over the years.

Frieda Hannah is a modest person. She is always embarrassed to talk about what she does. When asked on one occasion where she gets the energy and determination, she responded, "God did not place me in this world just to take up space. It is not enough just to go along. God wants me to make a difference where I can."

ENCOURAGEMENT

"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." = ACTION
There was never a man whose faith was shown by his actions than Dwight D Eisenhower.

It is a common practice at military academies for the upper classmen to haze the first-year students. This is part of the initiation rites. "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." = ACTION, as a second-year student at West Point, participated in these activities. One day a plebe, as freshmen were called, bumped into Eisenhower. Such an act was unpardonable, so Eisenhower responded as expected, yelling and screaming at the young cadet. Searching for the most demeaning thing he could utter, Eisenhower said the plebe looked like a barber. With that remark, the plebe drew himself up to his full height, squared his shoulders, thrust forth his jaw, and responded that he was a barber. It was as a barber that he had supported his family before coming to the Academy.

Devastated, Eisenhower returned to his room. He retold the incident to his roommate, confessing, "I've just done something stupid and unforgivable. I just managed to make a man ashamed of his work to earn a living." In his autobiography, Eisenhower wrote that for him this was a lesson about "the lack of consideration for others." In his room that day, Eisenhower vowed never to demean another individual again. It was a promise he kept throughout his life, even as Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War and as the thirty-fourth President of the United States. He became an encourager and it showed in the effectiveness of his leadership.

That is the very heart of the Christian faith in action!

3-12-23 "How long shall I put up with you?"

Scripture                                              Matthew 17:14-20

2 Peter 3:8-9  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
